"My name is Alan Mills and I have been researching a flag that has been in our family for since the Civil War. It was captured at the Battle of Arkansas Post by the 57th OVI, then commanded by my great-great grandfather, William Mungen. Along with the flag are several letters written by him during his campaigns, one describing the battle including a map.
The flag measures 69" x 41 3/8" and is made of what I believe to be cotton. A silk ribbon is sewn to the edges. The 'WILSON * GUARDS' looks like it was painted on or some type of ink. As you can see there are 11 stars, all have a thin outline ribbon, The entire flag appears to be hand sewn. The blue field has faded to a light gray and there are several holes, none of any great size. There is a small separation of the perimeter ribbon on the upper right corner. Aside from minor staining, the flag is in pretty good shape, considering its history. Evidently, it was on display in a shop window in Findlay, Ohio, after its capture - then stored away in a cedar trunk until 1972, when my grandfather passed away, and has been in my possession ever since."
